Melasma is a common skin disorder and form of hyperpigmentation in which patches of brown or gray discoloration occur on the skin—typically on the face. While melasma does not exhibit any painful symptoms or present as a health risk, it can pose a significant cosmetic concern for the women and men it affects. If you are troubled by hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone, Eminence Medical Aesthetics is proud to be at the forefront of a groundbreaking new treatment for melasma that restores patients complexions along with their confidence with beautiful results. The Illuminase treatment has been specially tailored for the treatment of melasma and has been clinically-proven to perform better than any other existing procedures for the condition.
What Causes Melasma and Hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation like melasma and sun spots occur when the skin produces excess melanin, the pigment that gives the skin its color. While melasma can affect anyone, it is more prevalent in those who have darker complexions and women who are pregnant. In fact, melasma is frequently referred to as the “mask of pregnancy” as it is estimated that as much as 50 to 70 percent of pregnant women in the U.S. will develop the condition. Melasma and hyperpigmentation are commonly caused by:
- Heredity; melasma often runs in families
- Hormones and hormonal medications such as birth control
- Pregnancy
- Sun exposure
- Injury and inflammation to the skin; usually caused by acne
What is Illuminase?
Developed by board-certified dermatologist Dr. Arielle Kauvar, Illuminase is a new skin treatment that has been shown to reduce the appearance of melasma and hyperpigmentation drastically. Using a cutting-edge three-step approach, Illuminase has been yielding remarkable results for patients that outperform any treatments currently available for these conditions. Illuminase combines microdermabrasion with lower energy YAG laser therapy and a pigment-reducing skin care regimen to restore balance to your skin’s complexion.

What to Expect From Your Illuminase Treatment
The first step of Illuminase is microdermabrasion—a gentle exfoliation treatment that sprays the skin’s surface with fine crystal particles to remove dead skin cells and promote cellular turnover. Clearing the surface of your skin allows for better laser light penetration for the next step of the procedure. The YAG laser works to break up excessive skin pigment to smaller particles which are gradually eliminated by the body’s natural healing mechanisms. The final step is the aftercare skin regimen, which is uniquely formulated to prevent excessive pigment production from reoccurring for long-lasting results.
Is There Any Downtime Needed After Illuminase?
As a nonsurgical and noninvasive treatment, there is no discomfort or downtime with Illuminase treatments. Melasma is known to worsen in response to skin irritation and inflammation, which frequently occurs with more aggressive laser treatments. However, the Illuminase treatment is so gentle that it does not irritate the skin and stimulate new pigment production, ensuring you get the results you expect.
When Can I Expect To See Results From Illuminase?
In clinical studies, Dr. Kauvar found that two to three Illuminase treatments spaced one month apart would clear up 75 percent or more of a patient’s abnormal skin pigmentation. Most patients observed that their discoloration had begun to vanish within two to three weeks of their Illuminase treatment. With the pigment-reducing skin care regimen, the results of Illuminase lasted for as long as 12 months before any discoloration reoccurred.
