What is Illuminase?

Illuminase is an aesthetic procedure used to treat melasma and other conditions that cause brown discoloration of the skin. It combines microdermabrasion with laser treatments.

Microdermabrasion is used to remove the dead skin cells on the topmost layer and to increase the skin’s sensitivity to the laser that breaks up the brown pigment. The body’s own systems then clear away the destroyed pigment, and the doctor prescribes a skincare regimen to keep the melasma from reappearing.

Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical treatment in which a hand-held device is placed on the patient’s skin and emits a spray of tiny crystals that exfoliate the skin. The device also vacuums up the crystals and dead skin. Microdermabrasion also stimulates the production of more collagen and elastin.

At our medical spa, we use the Alex TriVantage laser. It is a Q-switched laser that emits three wavelengths of light that can break up pigment of many different colors. It can, therefore, be used to remove tattoos as well as treat melasma.

What is Laser Genesis?

Laser Genesis is a technology that can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions, including the following:

• Scars
• Wrinkles
• Toe nail fungus
• Redness
• Large pores
• Oily skin

Laser Genesis works by heating the upper dermis well below the surface of the skin. That heat stimulates the growth of collagen, which results in tighter and more youthful-looking skin.
An esthetician will clean the client’s skin and give them protective eyewear. The doctor will run a handheld device that emits the laser over the treatment area. The laser will make the patient’s skin feel warmer, which some patients find pleasant. Many people need four to six sessions to get the desired results.
