Microneedling is actually a very old treatment, performed by doctors and treatment specialists in various parts of the world for centuries. However, the science behind this cosmetic skin rejuvenation procedure has advanced significantly in just the past few decades. Newer approaches to the procedure and efficiently devices have made this a popular treatment for skin blemishes. Acne scars and injury scars are prominent because the tissues that form the superficial scars keep reproducing themselves. Consider them permanently damaged, that is unless a means to stimulate healthy replacement tissue is employed. This is the idea behind microneedling. Purposely creating what are known as channel wounds is how the body creates healthier tissue.

Problems with Skin Blemishes

Most types of blemishes are caused by skin cells that keep dividing into daughter cells that have the same damages as the originals. Scarring along an old incision line is a good example. So are blemishes that exist for years after we burn our finger. The same is true with acne scarring.

Microneedling can help minimize the appearance of these scars through the creation of channel wounds. Channel wounds are tiny micro-openings that aren’t very wide and don’t go very deep. Indeed, they only penetrate to the lower dermal layers. Because there is an abundance of healthier tissue in between the wounds, the body has a good blueprint from which to work when creating healthier replacement cells.

The damaged skin cannot be completely replaced by healthy, new growth because even the skin that is unaffected by the channel wound creation is itself partially damaged. That is to say, it’s also part of the blemish. However, the body sends a great deal of nutrients including blood rich with platelets and other growth factors to accelerate replacement tissue growth. In the long-run, the newer skin growth is full of collagen, is more supple than what it replaced, and is less hyperpigmented.

The Procedure

In the months following the procedure, collagen production in the affected area has increased significantly, so the skin will soon become more supple in appearance. The more even tone results in a diminished appearance of any scarring or other forms of hyperpigmentation. Microneedling is effective on many areas of the body, not just the face.
