One of the great myths about skin care is that you must simply accept your age and your appearance. While aging is inevitable, premature aging is something we can do something about. Another myth is that the only procedure that offers real results in terms of anti-aging is a facelift. These days, there are quite a few treatment options that can turn back the hands of time on your face without the necessity for surgery. In spite of what some people think, they also offer real results that appear soft and natural. One of the best of these treatments is dermal fillers.

What Causes Skin Aging?

One of the chief causes of premature skin aging is the gradual depletion of certain substances that your body produces in abundance when you were young, but in lesser amounts as you grow older. Substances like collagen and hyaluronic acid can become depleted, leading to a loss of facial volume. Think of an air mattress that gradually deflates. When it was fully inflated, it was plump and round. As the air was let out, lines and creases began to form on the surface of the mattress. The same is true for your skin when it loses volume.

What are Dermal Fillers?

A dermal filler is an injectable substance meant to replace depleted skin tissue substances that lead to the development of lines and wrinkles. Some of the most common types of dermal fillers are hyaluronic acid-based.

Hyaluronic Acid

Unknown to many people, hyaluronic acid is a substance produced by your body in large amounts when you were young. As you grow older, you produce progressively less hyaluronic acid, and the amount that you do produce breaks down more readily.

Hyaluronic acid is similar to the air in that air mattress. It has a special ability to attract and bind a tremendous amount of water molecules, holding them within your skin cells. As you grow older and produce less hyaluronic acid, your skin begins to become dry and lose volume, leading to the development of lines and wrinkles.

By injecting your face with a hyaluronic acid dermal filler, we are correcting this age-related deficiency and reversing the process. Immediately after your treatment, you should notice an increase in facial fullness and a diminishment of fine lines and wrinkles.
