Laser vein therapy is a widely used method for getting rid of spider veins and their larger counterparts, varicose veins. It is a non-invasive treatment that does not require surgery or a stay in the hospital. In fact, people who have the treatments can typically return to their normal activities right away.

Varicose veins form mostly in the legs. They develop when blood begins to back up in the vessels, putting added pressure on the walls and enlarging the veins. The blood backs up because the valves that are there to ensure that the blood can only flow in the right direction fail to function as they should. As a result, the blood tries to go backwards because the natural pumping action of the heart forces the blood to flow against the pull of gravity in order to return it to the lungs, where it can receive a fresh supply of oxygen.

Varicose veins are common, but rarely ever wanted. This is why many people look for treatment options to have them removed. They often cause the skin to bulge out. Because they are blue in color, their presence becomes even more obvious. This negative impact on appearance can also hurt the person’s self-esteem in many cases.

Varicose veins aren’t always just a cosmetic issue. People with the condition often feel aches and pains, especially after a long day where much of their time has been spent standing or sitting in one position. Sometimes, swelling of the legs and ankles can occur. The level of discomfort associated with the presence of varicose veins is often enough to make people want to have them removed. There are also times when varicose veins can increase the risk of other health problems like blood clots.

Spider veins, on the other hand, seldom cause any physical discomforts and do not put one at risk for further complications. However, they can have a negative impact on one’s appearance. Because they frequently appear on the face, they can cause self-esteem issues. Spider veins develop in the smaller capillaries that are located closer to the skin. They can be red, blue or purple.

Laser vein therapy is effective at treating both varicose and spider veins. The CoolGlide technology used in our office works by delivering pulses of light to the targeted vessels in order to disable them. The body will begin to absorb the tissue that is left from the veins so that they disappear from view over the next several weeks.

In most cases, the pulsed light energy involved in laser vein therapy is emitted by passing a wand across the surface of the skin just above the location of the targeted veins. The technology allows for the veins to be safely treated while the surrounding tissue is not disturbed. The exact time it takes for the targeted veins to disappear varies from person to person, but patients generally see results after 2-6 weeks. This treatment can be repeated multiple times to treat any new varicose or spider veins that may appear over time.
