Every hair removal method has its own set of benefits and drawbacks. Shaving often causes rapid regrowth and may even lead to coarser and darker hairs in some instances. Moreover, shaving is not the ideal solution for certain forms of facial hair, nor is it a suitable facial treatment for women. Waxing and threading are both highly uncomfortable. These treatments can also increase the likelihood of skin infection by leaving the follicles open and exposed. Electrolysis for hair removal can be tedious, highly uncomfortable and invasive. It can also lead to some undesirable side effects.
What is Electrolysis?
During electrolysis for hair removal, individual hair follicles are targeted with either chemicals or heat energy. This destroys the follicles in question so that future hair growth is considerably more sparse or non-existent.
Even when performed properly and without complications, electrolysis can be extremely tedious and inconvenient. Depending upon the area being treated and the coarseness and thickness of the targeted hair, a person may need up to 30 electrolysis treatments before the targeted follicles have been effectively destroyed.
Unlike waxing or threading procedures that frequently entail intense, but brief discomfort, electrolysis for hair removal involves short bursts of moderate discomfort all throughout the treatment session. Most people compare this discomfort to the sensation of being pricked or stung. The important thing to note, however, is that each and every hair follicle across the targeted site will be exposed to this sensation multiple times before the entire procedure is complete. As such, the treatment process can be quite excruciating.
Skin that has recently been tweezed or waxed may be more difficult to treat. These hair removal methods can cause follicles to become misshapen and bent. This significantly increases the challenge of getting the electrolysis needle down to the hair’s root so that the follicle can be destroyed. When this is the case, people often require a number of additional treatments.
